Questions and answers

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Blokkwood?

What is Blokkwood?
Blokkwood is a Hungarian patent of a heat treatment and wood modification process.

In the procedure, the surface as well as the structure of the timber are transformed, improving many of the wood’s parameters. The end result is a durable and resistant timber of improved quality.

Is Blokkwood a surface treatment procedure?
No, Blokkwood technology is not merely a surface treatment process.

The timber is treated in its entire cross-section and internal structure.

Is Blokkwood a chemical thermal treatment procedure?
In the course of the Blokkwood thermal treatment, the wood’s humidity and structure is changed with the help of a salt-containing catalyst.

The end result is proven to be chemical-free.
The catalyst is not incorporated into the wood’s structure in any way.

This salt compound is harmless both to human life and the environment.

Is Blokkwood a wood drying technology?
During the thermal treatment, by gradually increasing temperature, the wood’s moisture content is significantly reduced.

As such, it may be categorised as a timber drying technology.

The Blokkwood treatment can substitute the lengthy and costly kiln drying and vacuum drying process. Pre-drying of timber, however, must be carried out.

How long does it take to heat treat an ordinary tree with Blokkwood technology?

A basic treatment lasts 8 hours.

To change the timber’s hue, further 1-4 hours are needed.

What distinguishes the Blokkwood technology from other thermal treatment procedures?
The Blokkwood thermal treatment is a mild process.

The timber’s 3-6% of its own moisture content remains after treatment.

Other procedures may reduce the wood’s moisture content even to zero, then raising it back to the desired level. This subjects the timber’s internal structure to considerable stress, sometimes even to the point of failure, while the properties of the wood hardly improve at all.

What surface treatment may be applied on Blokkwood treated timber (paint, varnish, oiling, impregnation, etc.)?
Blokkwood treated timber may receive further surface treatment, but this is not necessary.

In case of outdoor use, the application of UV protection is advisable. For indoor use, a thin layer of varnish or oiling may add to the product’s lifetime already enhanced by the treatment.

Advantages

What are the benefits of using Blokkwood timber?

It resists moisture better, absorbing less water, releasing the absorbed water without warpage. It’s antibacterial, resists mould, fungi and pests, therefore it is also recommended for outdoor use.

Blokkwood timber is lighter and harder, retaining the wood’s natural features, accentuating the annual growth rings and the grain structure, which is an important design feature.

Such value-added Blokkwood timber can be sold at a higher price.

How water resistant is Blokkwood timber?
Blokkwood timber absorbs very little water, easily releasing the absorbed water without warping. Its water resistance is improved in comparison to untreated timber.
How dimensionally stable is Blokkwood timber?
In contrast to conventional thermal wood treatment methods, Blokkwood timber is not only more durable, but less prone to warping and resists the effects of weather better.
How easily can Blokkwood timber be machined?
Blokkwood timber is more compact and harder, its screw resistance is greatly improved, its machinability is identical to other timbers, but the tools used in machining Blokkwood timber are exposed to higher loads.
Is the Blokkwood technology environmentally friendly?
Yes, the technology is eco-friendly and sustainable.

The timber’s processing time may be shortened; pre-drying and the Blokkwood treatment itself may be performed in the Blokkwood ovens, meaning the timber does not have to be heated up repeatedly. This can increase production efficiency, and time and energy can be saved with a reduced environmental load.

The Blokkwood timber is proven to be chemical-free, increasing the lifecycle of products.

Application

What products may be made of Blokkwood?
Everything that had conventionally been made of wood can be made of Blokkwood as well.
Is Blokkwood treated timber suitable as a structural material?
Blokkwood may be suitable for the construction industry, and the corresponding certifications are underway.
What fields of application does Blokkwood treated timber have?

Its scope of application is very broad, be it:

  • Carpentry and joinery or interior decoration
(e.g. outdoor and indoor furniture, wall cladding, acoustic panels, picture frames, lamps, decorative items, tables, chairs, kitchen worktop, (finger jointed) clampboards, stairs, balusters, flooring and saunas),
  • Outdoor items (e.g. outdoor flooring, barriers, gazebos, flower beds, gates, fences, sandboxes and wall cladding),
  • Musical instruments.
What timbers can be treated with the Blokkwood procedure?
Any species of timber can be treated. We already have significant experience in treating ash, coniferous species, oak, poplar, Turkey oak, beech, maple, cedar and walnut.

The tests of other species, mostly exotic ones, are also underway.

Basically, timber with moisture content between 18-25% may be treated, but treating timber with moisture content as high as 30-40% is also possible by extending the duration of treatment.

What workpiece dimensions can be treated?

We currently operate 2 Blokkwood ovens with the following dimensions:

  1. One with a capacity of 1 m3 in which 3 m long, 20 cm wide, 1” or 2” thick edged planks may be treated,
  2. One with a capacity of 3 m3 for treating 4 m long, 20 cm wide, 1” or 2” thick sawntimber.
What tools and materials do you need for the Blokkwood procedure?
  1. Good quality Class 1 or select material with moisture content between 20-35%,
  2. A Blokkwood oven and the heating panels, and the catalyst in the panel containing the special salt,
  3. The precise treatment sequence adjusted to the timber species to control the oven’s operation.
Can any thermal treatment oven be used for the Blokkwood procedure?
No, the Blokkwood heat treatment is only possible in the special oven designed for this purpose.
